Is Smoking Sexy? The evidence suggests, YES

The reason I ask the question: “Do people still think smoking is sexy?”
It is because after all the articles that have been written and all the evidence of the harm they are causing themselves and the people near to them, I am astonished when I go to an event or gathering where lots of the younger generation gather to see just how many of them are smoking!

From everything I see and hear, I guess the answer is still a resounding YES!

My partner was in hospital a while back with a near-fatal condition, (thankfully she did survive and is making a good recovery). The reason I bring it up is that I was absolutely shocked to see how many doctors and nurses were smoking around the hospital grounds.

There were patients on gurneys attached to drips outside the wards puffing away merrily with the staff who had wheeled them out.

I presume I had been lulled into some sense that people were finally getting the message, as I wasn’t really in smokers’ company that often, and of course, restaurants and most public places have now banned smoking.

Is Smoking Sexy?

The smell of smoke and tobacco around the hospital was overwhelming, so I had to assume that people still think so.

Below is a video on YouTube of a 3 young women smoking, and it’s been viewed thousands of times! So people are actually going to YouTube just to find videos of people smoking because they think it’s sexy. It really is hard to believe. I find it hard to believe that this is considered cool or sexy.

The bottom line is – Is smoking sexy?

In my humble opinion, 100 per cent NO.

I think you’ll agree there is nothing sexy about putting yourself at risk of getting Lung Cancer.

The association between smoking and “sexiness” is largely a product of historical media influence and psychological associations:

  1. Media and Hollywood: During Hollywood’s Golden Era, cigarettes were frequently used as cinematic shorthand for sexual desire, maturity, or post-intimacy cues [3].
This cemented an image of smoking as “glamorous” in the collective consciousness [1].

  2. Perceived Traits: Some research suggests that smoking can make individuals appear “stronger” or more “daring” to certain observers [4]. It is often tied to a “rebel” or “bad boy/girl” persona that signals non-conformity [5].

Despite these lingering cultural tropes, modern perceptions have shifted significantly. Most people now view smoking primarily as a health hazard, associating it with poor hygiene and serious illness rather than allure.
But ther are still a huge amount of people who it a sexual appeal.

Below is another video I found on YouTube which is educational, and I do urge you to watch it and maybe forward it to someone who is finding it difficult to motivate himself or herself into quitting smoking.

Maybe you think Vaping is a better choice although it is a highly debated alternative to traditional smoking, presenting a mix of potential benefits and significant risks.

Pros

  • Harm Reduction: Vaping is generally considered a safer way to ingest nicotine compared to combustible cigarettes [2]. While not risk-free, it is significantly less harmful than tobacco [4].
  • Cessation Tool: It serves as an effective aid for those attempting to quit smoking cigarettes and overcome tobacco addiction [1].
  • Environmental Impact: Vaping avoids the issues associated with secondhand smoke produced by burning plant material [1].

Cons

  • Health Risks: E-cigarettes still contain harmful substances and can adversely affect health, such as reducing the antioxidant capacity of saliva [1][3].
  • Youth Appeal: The flavors and marketing are often criticized for being overly appealing to teenagers, potentially leading to new nicotine addictions [1].
  • Physical Dangers: There are recorded instances of e-cigarette batteries catching fire or exploding [2].
